Citrus Heights sits in the heart of Sacramento County's suburban landscape, approximately 20 miles northeast of downtown Sacramento. The city was incorporated on January 1, 1997, when voters approved incorporation with a 62.5% majority in a ballot measure passed in November 1996. Today, with a 2020 census population of 87,583 residents, the city has grown to become one of the region's significant suburban centers, increasing 5.1% from the 2010 census count.
The city's location puts it at a crossroads of regional transportation. Interstate 80 runs through the city's western side, while Interstate 5, U.S. Highway 50, and California State Route 99 are all within a few miles. Sacramento Regional Transit (SacRT), the region's largest transit provider, established in 1973, serves Citrus Heights along with Sacramento County and surrounding communities through its extensive bus and light rail network.
