No-exam life insurance

What accelerated underwriting is, who qualifies, and what it means if you don't get approved through it.

Many carriers now offer accelerated underwriting: for applicants in certain age and amount ranges, they make a decision using your application, prescription records, driving history, and other information, not a medical exam. Approval sometimes comes the same day. Each quote says whether an exam is required, might be, or is not needed.

What it changes

An accelerated decision doesn't skip underwriting. Your answers are checked, and if a policy is issued based on false answers, the carrier can challenge it in the first two years. If the carrier's research flags a question, they may ask for an exam or lab work anyway.

Who tends to qualify

Roughly: applicants younger than 60, applying for amounts within the carrier's fast-track limit, with no serious health history and no tobacco use in the past year or longer. Some carriers accept recent blood work from your doctor instead of a new exam.

If an exam is part of the process, a paramedical professional typically comes to your location in the Citrus Heights area for a 20- to 30-minute visit at no charge. For applicants in good health, exam results often result in a better rate class, so an exam is not necessarily a drawback.
